Austria Food Blog Award 2021

As many of you may have noticed on Instagram, we entered some of our recipes for the Austria Food Blog Award in the summer and even made it to the finals. But let's start from the beginning, otherwise no one will keep up!

The Austria Food Blog Award (AFBA) is a jury prize that has been awarded to food bloggers in Austria (and beyond) since 2012. Every year there are different categories in which you can apply with a recipe. This year's categories were:

Eat consciously

Best green kitchen tips

Baking with love

Food to go

Italy and the world of coffee

Cooking and enjoying with cheese and

15 minutes summer cooking

Michael came across this competition by chance in July and thought we should apply, along the motto "It costs nothing" and "It's sure to be an exciting experience". No sooner said than done. While we both had our hands full with our summer jobs, we tested recipes, brainstormed good ideas, took photos and wrote blog posts, posted on Instagram etc. in the short free time we had in the early morning and afternoon. Honestly?! It was enormously stressful and we were often on the verge of quitting. But we somehow managed and submitted 4 recipes just before the deadline (beginning of August).

The recipes were No-Waste Falafel in the eating consciously category, a Caffè Panna Cotta in the Italy and the World of Caffè category, a 15-Minute Glass Noodle Bowl in the 15-Minute Summer Kitchen category and our Sourdough Cardamom Brioche Buns in the Baking with Love category.

So we had submitted our recipes and now we had to wait until the shortlist was announced in September with all the recipes that made it to the grand final. In the meantime, we had almost forgotten about the whole thing and were therefore all the more surprised when we found out that two of our recipes had made it to the final in October, the Caffè Panna Cotta and the Cardamom Brioches. Totally crazy!

So when the day of the big award ceremony arrived, we were totally excited and not really sure what to expect. It was our first time ever at a competition and therefore particularly exciting. To be honest, we came to the final without any great expectations, just wanted to have a nice evening and let the rest take care of itself.

So believe us, we were blown away by winning second place in the Italy and the World of Caffé category with our Caffè Panna Cotta and then unexpectedly taking first place in the Baking with Love category with our Cardamom Brioches.

We were of course delighted, and are still delighted, about this award. What many people may not know: After a pretty difficult year, it was a great confirmation for us that what we do with our blog and on Instagram is not just "wasted" time (which is what you hear all too often) or a hobby that leads nowhere. The dreamer in us has come back to life after this evening and is ready for everything that is still to come.

But what was MUCH BETTER than all the prizes together were the incredibly great people we got to meet that evening. So many passionate food bloggers in one place, with whom we could discuss food, photography, cookbooks, sourdough and much more, and make great new contacts. A blast! We enjoyed our evening immensely and are incredibly grateful and happy.

In a nutshell, this random find on the internet has given us one of the best experiences we've had in a long time and we can't wait to meet all the wonderful people again next year when it's "It's time for AFBA 2022"!
