VEGAN CRISPY TOFU TACOS WITH SPICY MANGO SALSA

 

In this recipe, we’ll show you how to prepare one of the tastiest street foods ever. We're talking about TACOS, of course. When it comes to tacos, there are probably as many different recipes out there as there are fish in the sea, so OF COURSE we had to come up with our very own taco recipe at some point. And here we are. It's not a traditional recipe, but it's still incredibly delicious, very easy to prepare and you’ll only need a few ingredients.

For our taco recipe, as with all other taco recipes, you’ll need delicious tortillas. Whether you buy them or make them yourself is entirely up to you. However, our motto is: homemade still tastes best. So, if you feel like making your own tortillas at home, you can find the super easy recipe here on our blog.

The next component you need for a delicious taco is, of course, the filling. Here too, there are countless delicious and varied options, with beans, 'minced meat', 'cheese', avocado, etc. In our taco, the filling consists of crispy fried tofu. The tofu is coated in a beer batter and then fried in a pan until golden brown. Finally, we like to sprinkle our tofu with a little salt and our secret spice mix for that extra kick.

Last but not least, a really good taco needs a salsa to go with it. Whether it's made from tomatoes, onions, avocado or fruit, a delicious salsa will take your taco to the next level. In our recipe, the salsa consists of mango, lime juice and a few spices. Sounds pretty simple? It kind of does. But does it taste crazy delicious nevertheless? Abso-freaking-lutely!

VEGAN CRISPY TOFU TACOS WITH SPICY MANGO SALSA

Zutaten

Ingredients for the crispy tofu
  • 400 g firm tofu
  • 50 ml water
  • 2 EL Seaweed (dashi kombu or nori)
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 90 g flour
  • 2 tsp starch (potato or corn starch)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 100 g beer or sparkling water
For the spicy Mango Salsa
  • 1 mango
  • 3 tbsp lime juice or lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika powder
  • ½ tsp chilli powder/cayenne pepper
  • 1 TL chiliflakes (only if you want to/are able to handle the spice ;)
Also
  • 10 tortillas (wheat or corn tortillas up to your personal preference)
  • Lettuce, sprouts, coriander
  • Pickled vegetables (onion, radish...)

Zubereitung

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. For the salsa, peel the mango. Cut one half of the mango into rough pieces and add to your blender together with the remaining ingredients and puree finely, of course you can also use a hand blender for this. Now cut the other half of the mango into small cubes and add to the salsa, mix everything together.
  2. To make the batter for the Crispy Tofu soak the seaweed in the water, add the clove of garlic and blend everything finely with a hand blender. IN a bowl combine flour, starch and baking powder. Add the seaweed mixture and the beer/sparkling water and whisk until there are no more lumps in the batter.
  3. Next you want to drain the tofu, pat it dry with a towel if necessary and then carefully break it into bite-sized pieces with your hands or cut into slabs with a knife. Now season the tofu on both sides with salt.
  4. Add frying oil to a deep pan (about 1cm high) and heat It up to approximately 165C°. If you don't have a kitchen thermometer, you can simply use a wooden stick (we normally use a chopstick) to see if you reached the right temperature. To do this, hold the wooden stick in the oil. If many small bubbles form around the stick, the oil is ready.
  5. Coat the tofu pieces with the prepared batter and carefully place them in the pan with the oil. Fry until the tofu is golden brown on both sides (around 3-5 minutes). Carefully remove from the pan and drain on a kitchen towel. Salt the finished Crispy Tofu again immediately after frying. You can also coat your Tofu with your preferred spicy spice mixture for the extra kick.
  6. Warm the tortillas in a pan. Finely chop the lettuce, dress with a squeeze of lemon juice and a little salt. Arrange all the remaining toppings, the salsa and the tofu. And that's it - now you can assemble your Crispy Tofu Taco with all the ingredients. Enjoy!
